Embracing Generational Diversity: Creating a Mind set for Growth

Back in 2020, we had launched our fully digitalized employee management system, with the usual launch formalities and a well-crafted change management plan. We realised that it wasn’t just about technology, rather it was a testament to our commitment towards inclusivity and innovation. During this transition, we noticed something fascinating: the eagerness of older team members to dive into digital platforms and the powerful impact of reverse mentoring from our younger colleagues. This experience gave us invaluable insights into the unique needs and perspectives across our diverse workforce.

Our team at GHCL, is a mix of seasoned Baby Boomers, some of whom have been with us for over three decades, alongside Gen Xers, Millennials and Gen Zers. This diverse cohort brings a wealth of experience, innovation, and fresh ideas that enrich organisational strategy. In today’s digital age, bridging generational gaps may seem daunting, but I see these differences as a source of rich diversity augmenting our collective thought, perspective and cultural awareness. Instead of biases, we are actively fostering a harmonious blend of generations to unleash the power of diversity.

Through initiatives like robust succession planning, mentoring programs, age-agnostic hiring practices, and comprehensive diversity and inclusion trainings, we are bringing together the collective wisdom of our workforce. We know that each generation has unique tools and insights shaped by their experiences and environments, transforming age diversity into a catalyst for innovative thinking. I am excited by how we have embraced this diversity within our teams through our commitment to a culture of continuous learning that fosters collaboration, knowledge-sharing and mutual understanding among colleagues of all ages.

As a leader, I ensure these four key areas of action:

    • Building trust and creating an environment where employees feel empowered to express themselves.
    • Creating a bias-free workplace that embraces diversity in all forms.
    • Developing empathy and appreciation for diverse styles and voices within our organization.
    • Leveraging employee knowledge and experiences to fuel growth-oriented strategies.

I believe that in the face of evolving business landscapes, diverse representation and intergenerational cohesion is crucial. It helps develop empathy, deepen our understanding, and empowers us to perform more effectively.

I also recognize that a “one size fits all” approach is outdated. Our strategic vision motivates and engages our diverse employees and ensures that each generation contributes uniquely to the company’s vision and strategy. We are constantly looking for better ways to leverage this wealth of diversity to drive sustainable success. We are proud to embrace these generational differences as a foundation of our collective strength and innovation.
