Balu – Leading life with strength and courage

Balu, 30, lives in the coastal village of Lati, 12 km away from Somnath.

Balu was born blind and was totally dependent on his father.  But, wanted to be self-sufficient and so, he learnt to weave the sleeping cot with jute ropes which are often used by the villagers in their courtyards. To encourage Balu, the villagers would often give him orders in exchange for some small remuneration.

Balu’s father worried about his son and never left him alone. Their house had no toilet and Balu would stay hungry when his father was traveling as he was afraid of going out alone.

One day GHCL Foundation Trust visited the village and made people aware of the importance of sanitation and reason why they should construct toilets in their houses. Balu’s father was interested but, the cost of constructing a toilet in the rocky coastal land was very expensive. Balu’s father dropped his plan for constructing a toilet in his house.

GHCL Foundation trust stepped forward and helped Balu’s father financially for constructing the toilet in their house. Since then, life has been very easy for Balu. Today his father is no more, but he made sure that after him his son is not dependent on anyone.

Balu has learned to lead his life well despite all odds.
