Jayaben says “I am empowered in multiple ways”

Jayaben lives in Sutrapada near GHCL’s Soda Ash plant. She is a member of a Self Help Group promoted by GHCL Foundation.

Jayaben has many responsibilities. She helps on the farm, takes care of livestock, cares for her bedridden mother-in-law and does all the domestic chores too. Initially, she was unable to attend the SHG meetings and GHCL’s training and exposure visits . Other SHG members regularly attended and updated her. But Jayaben was enthusiastic and whenever she got some time, she tried to attend the meetings. Inspired by the training she started a small saving of Rs.100/- every month. She opened a bank account, learnt about banking transactions, withdrawing money from the ATM and some basic accounting too.

When she got to know about various other social initiatives of GHCL Foundation, she signed up for benefits like organic fertilizer, seeds, nutritious feed for animals, health care services from Mobile Dispensary etc. She was also trained on animal care and organic farming practices.

To put her learning to good use,  Jayaben started a cattle feed centre. She convinced her  husband and took a loan of Rs. 25000/- from the SHG.

Today, Jayaben owns, operates and manages her cattle feed centre. She has paid back the loan and earns commission on each bag sold. Jayaben says, “Five years ago, I was just a housewife, but after joining GHCL’s women empowerment program, I  have experienced real empowerment”.
